1. Lack of Planning
The lack of planning is the biggest faux pas in kitchen designing. “But I’m just a spontaneous and impulsive person!” you might contend. That’s possibly well and good in other areas of life, but in kitchen designing, not planning ahead has serious repercussions. For starters, you’ll run the risk of having an unfinished kitchen as homeowners tend to exhaust their funds prior to completion when prior planning is absent. How chic is having a half-glam half-undone kitchen?
Even if this problem does not materialise, the number two reason of going over your budget doesn’t sound good either. This is because time constraints can have a domino effect in kitchen designing. Different jobs might be done by different contractors and this might lead to delays. Additional costs need to be incurred for such delays, and the completion time for the entire kitchen designing project will be affected as well.
Problem Solvers
- Start the kitchen design project by asking yourself these über important questions beforehand:
- Given the size, shape and location of your space, what will work for your kitchen?
- How will you utilise your kitchen space to match your lifestyle?
- What products and layouts can you choose from? What about the pros and cons of each? - Running all over the kitchen when cooking can be tiring and disorienting. Avoid this by grouping elements in your kitchen according to their corresponding workstations such as preparation, cooking and preparation.
- Too little storage space will pose problems for storing items, whereas too much storage will cause unsightly vacant spaces in your kitchen. Curb this problem by enumerating all the items that belong in storage and accommodate the spaces for them. Organise them according to the workstations they belong to.
- Prioritise, prioritise, prioritise! The importance of prioritising cannot be emphasised enough. It is essential to avoid being unable to fit everything in your kitchen or going over your budget. Especially when the space or your budget doesn’t accommodate, prioritising beforehand helps in discerning dispensable items to be forgone.
Tip: Consult friends and relatives to obtain a second opinion. Preferably, visit their houses for some much needed inspiration.
2. Letting Your Designer Decide Everything
Taking on a kitchen designing task can be overwhelming and confusing. It’s so much easier with a designer’s aid, isn’t it? This might be true, but never go overboard and let your designer decide your kitchen design entirely. You might not know the A to Z of interior designing, but the look and feel of the kitchen you desire should be communicated to your designer to avoid having a kitchen you loathe in the end.
Problem Solvers
- Keeping up with the Joneses might be part of being human but try to avoid this by opting for fashionable yet timeless and classic styles for your kitchen.
- Wouldn’t it be nice to have all those beautiful fittings in your kitchen? As tempting as it is, don’t overdesign kitchens as it can be repulsive to the eye.
- Another eyesore: kitchens with designs that clash with other parts of the house. Remember to maintain fluidity and harmony throughout the entire house.
Tip: The upcoming trend of replacing monochrome with colourful finishes in kitchens can make your monochromatic kitchens appear blah. Resist the temptation of an overhaul as trends can come and go. Nothing wrong with monochrome: but if you’re going for colour, do it with smaller accents.
