The Green Crusade
Name: Cork
Characteristics: A green flooring alternative, cork is created removing only the bark, leaving the tree unharmed. The cellular structure of the wood gives it a comfortable, springy feel.
Aesthetic Appeal: The bark gives the flooring a refreshing nature-inspired feel to the room without being too overwhelming. Cork flooring is usually available in a variety of tinted finishes.

Tip: Cork is great for kids’ playrooms. It’s soft enough to minimise a child’s tumble and absorbs sound well. Cork ‘remembers’ its shape well, preventing dents and scuffs from furniture or toys.

The Penny-Pincher
Name: Vinyl
Characteristics: Vinyl is value-conscious. It is a resistant material, and works perfectly for the bathroom and the kitchen. Most vinyl comes in large single-sheets or tile-sized sheets, making for simple do-it-yourself installation.
Aesthetic Appeal: Gone are the gaudy designs of the 1960s; vinyl now can look as beautiful as glass tiles or even create a faux hardwood look.

Tip: The cushion backing for vinyl flooring comes in a variety of thickness. The thicker option is suitable for the kitchen - it may just save that dropped wine glass.
